Very commonly, the Eating Disorder is a symptom of another disorder or a constellation of disorders, typically involving anxiety and depression. More than 50% of clients have multiple addictions, and as the eating disorder improves, another addiction gets stronger. Many clients with an Eating Disorder also have other psychiatric disorders, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Social Anxiety Disorder, and once they give up eating disorder symptoms, the other psychiatric symptoms become more acute. It is important that such diagnoses are made early in treatment and treated simultaneously with the eating disorder. The same is trued for trauma-based disorders such as sexual abuse or Attachment Disorder of childhood. |
