December 9, 2013 by Nancy Albus LPC NCC CEDS in Announcements As a dedicated eating disorder professional and an avid golfer, sponsoring and playing in a golf tournament that benefits the Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness (AEDA) helps celebrate both of these personal passions. On December 12th, I’ll be representing Castlewood Treatment Center at the 2013 Alliance Golf Classic in Florida.
Created in 2000, this exceptional non-profit organization has provided extensive programs and activities aimed at outreach and education on eating disorders, positive body image, and self-esteem. Castlewood is proud to not only be a platinum sponsor of the Alliance and this year’s golf classic fundraiser, but to be playing! LPGA star Beatriz Recardi is the official ambassador of the golf benefit, and she too is supporting AEDA for reasons beyond just a personal love of the game: Beatriz is in recovery from an eating disorder.
In 2007, at age 19, Beatriz was playing on the European professional women’s golf circuit when her eating disorder nearly brought an end to her career, and more importantly, to her health. Dropping to nearly 100 pounds and exhibiting many of the symptoms of a severe eating disorder, including hair loss, Beatriz’s need for professional help for her eating disorder became essential.
Since her recovery, this dynamic young woman has continued her impressive golf skills on the LPGA tour, in addition to sharing generously of her time in the cause of eating disorder awareness.
Castlewood has put together a strong foursome that just might have us putting on the proverbial green jacket at the end of the tournament—but even more important is the opportunity to join forces with colleagues in the national treatment community in support of the Alliance of Eating Disorder Awareness. In the spirit of collaboration, community, and outreach, staff from Cumberland Heights, a respected chemical dependency treatment center in Tennessee, will be part of our team.
